It is essential for us to look after our wellbeing at work. Whether you are working from home, are back in the office, or working the new hybrid format, you need to look after yourself. Here are five simple ways to improve your wellbeing at work:

Take regular breaks.

Sitting at your desk all day can take a toll on your physical and mental health. Make sure to take frequent breaks to stretch, walk around, or simply rest your eyes. If you have face-to-face meetings try and organise for them to be a walk around the office or even better, outside around the block.

If you have a bit of time, check out these 10 – 15 minute workouts which you can fit into your day. They range from chair yoga to cardio dance workouts.

Stay hydrated.

Drinking enough water throughout the day can help you stay focused, alert, and energised. Keep a water bottle at your desk and aim to drink around 8 glasses or 2.5 litres a day. Or walking to the kitchen for water could be a good way to take your regular breaks.

Practice mindfulness.

Mindfulness techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, and yoga can help you stay calm and centred.

If you need a moment of mindfulness try the 5 senses mindfulness exercise. It is a simple but effective practice which involves using your senses to bring you into the present moment and cultivate mindfulness. It can be done anywhere and at any time, which can help you feel more grounded and reduce stress and anxiety.

Connect with colleagues.

Building positive relationships with your co-workers can boost your mood and help you feel more supported and connected. Take time to chat with colleagues, say good morning and ask them how their weekend was, attend team-building events, or join the workplace social club. Also, when chatting to colleagues aim to stay positive about your day, rather than focusing on the negative.

Set boundaries.

It’s important to maintain a healthy work-life balance and avoid burnout. Set clear boundaries around your work hours and responsibilities, and be sure to make time for hobbies, friends, and family outside of work.

Work takes up so much of our time, it is important that we look after our health, happiness and wellbeing whilst at work.

Do you have any strategies for looking after your wellbeing at work? Is there something that drops off your wellbeing schedule when you are too busy or feeling stressed? Maybe you don’t exercise as regularly or you don’t get all your beauty sleep. For me, it’s probably the exercise that drops off, even though I always feel better after I exercise so it’s probably even more important when I am busy. Let me know yours in the comments.

I forget to get up and stretch. I end up with a tension headache. Another tip, try out a walking meeting for conversation types of meetings. Fun and active if possible for your job.
